Scoliosis: Girls and boys experience scoliosis at about the same rate, most often during their early teenage years. Girls, however, are far more likely to experience larger spine curvatures requiring, x-rays, therapy, bracing and sometimes surgery. This can add a lot of stress, fear and confusion to an already challenging time of life. Often kids and parents find themselves with questions and issues they are not prepared to handle.
Curvy Girls is a network of peer-led support groups that reduce the emotional impact of scoliosis by empowering girls through mutual support and acceptance to become leaders, make healthy lifestyle choices, improve self-esteem while giving back to the Curvy Girls community.
We are so happy to announce the start of our own, local Curvy Girls of the Triangle Chapter. This scoliosis support group is a place where kids and parents can get together to talk with others facing similar issues. Wear a back brace? Worry about surgery? Want to talk to someone like you? Want to help other girls?
Come join local group founders Laura and her mom Beverly on the 3rd Saturday of every month at 3:00. The next meeting is:
August 19th from 3 to 4:30 pm in Hillsborough NC. For information call (919) 923-6172 or email at: TriNC@curvygirlsscoliosis.com
Wow! Teen nick HALO Awards:
Laura participated in a photo shoot in NYC in June to promote scoliosis awareness. Above is a great shot of Laura from the photo shoot. Martha Hunt, Victoria Secret model and NC native, invited Laura to represent NC at the event! Teen Vogue covered the photo shoot and released their video story; this link takes you to the video. Laura makes a brief appearance in the video — her brace is the one being painted, and then you’ll see a quick shot of her. She’s also in the group photo, standing on the end, right side. This event was a bright spot for Laura in an ongoing and sometimes difficult journey.
