What clients are saying about personal training at Advance Physical Therapy

When I first came to Advance Physical Therapy for “physical therapy” I had no idea that this was the beginning of a new journey.  The introduction to Postural Restoration was exactly what my body needed, not just heal my current injuries, but to help change my body for life. After working with the therapists and conquering my injuries I decided to take the Walking Class with Beth Elder.  This was my first introduction to Beth and it was fabulous. Beth is an extremely knowledgeable instructor who had also recently integrated “Postural Restoration” into her personal training career.  Beth integrated this into every facet of her business; Walking, Running, Pilates and Personal Training.

Riding on the wave of Beth’s enthusiasm I decided that my worn out exercise routine was actually doing more harm than good and was counter productive to my postural restoration therapy exercises so I enlisted Beth’s help as a personal trainer and I highly recommend that everyone do the same.  She helped me customize every single exercise within my video workouts that I like to use and also develop other creative routines.  I have learned so much from Beth that my workouts are more challenging, more interesting and definitely safer.  Thanks Beth and I hope we will continue to grow in fitness together for many years!

– Adela Van Name

Beth has an extensive knowledge of anatomy, but also the physics of movement and exercise. As I’m learning to do my workout, she’s explaining the reasons behind why I do an exercise this way. The fact that she works in alliance with my physical therapist, gave me the confidence to hire her and stay with her workout. Beth has unconditional acceptance of where I am in my progress, plus she cheers me on! She gives unwavering positive regard as I’m endeavoring to learn and progress. I like how the workout proceeds from the breath, and awareness of letting go tension of the neck and shoulders.

– Barbara Janeway

I came to APT in early 2012 after 4 years of knee problems resulting in a fall that severally injured my shoulder.  I had the 4 hour shoulder surgery in May 2012 followed by VERY successful physical therapy at APT with Jean Masse.

However, by September 2012 it was really clear to me that if I did not change to a healthy lifestyle, my increasingly limited ability to walk would make more falls likely and, more importantly quickly limit my life options.  Jean recommended that I start meeting with Beth 2X per week learning and using Postural Restoration to completely change the way I walk.

I was a non-exerciser all my life. Through Beth’s expertise and her very much needed motivation we (the two of us together) have given me a completely different body. Today, 18 months later, I am 85 pounds lighter, I exercise almost every day including walking over 10 miles per week using my strong body and what I learned at Beth’s Chi-walking sessions.

My commitment to 2X per week with “The Amazing Beth” will continue to be my investment to keep my 70 year old body MUCH younger than when I started.  You are welcome to contact me if you are thinking about starting your own journey with Beth as your coach.

– Frankie Price Stern

I have been training with Beth for about 9 months. I started personal training to try and gain strength that I had lost due to inactivity as a consequence of back and hip injuries. I had tied to work on my own to gain strength and had either increased intensity too quickly and/or used bad technic so that I ended up making my injuries worse or I had not had enough intensity to the workouts to gain any strength. By contrast, working with Beth has been extremely rewarding. At our initial meeting she took the time to find out about my goals and to carefully assess my abilities. Beth designed an initial workout routine that was well suited to my level of ability. It was challenging without being beyond what I was capable of.

Further, that workout, as with all the workout routines Beth has designed for me, had been engineered to complement my physical therapy exercises. Thus, I have been able to make progress on both rehabilitation of my injuries and work on gaining strength. As I became proficient with the initial workout, Beth has designed modifications that keep the exercises challenging without increasing the difficulty beyond my ability to cope. Thus, I have been rewarded for my work and have maintained (and expect to continue to maintain) a high level of enthusiasm for the process. So I can strongly recommend Beth Elder as a personal trainer for people of all levels of ability.

I have been working with Beth Elder for about six months.  I bought a training package that included one session with my primary Postural Restoration (PR) therapist.  Beth has worked with me on my schedule which averages out to once per month.  I also took a Chi walking class from her.

She has superb listening skills and consistently checks for what you need from her now and what your current goals are.  What has impressed me the most is how much my training with her has improved what my therapist is helping me with.  Even if I am doing PR exercises daily, for my pattern, it is not enough to achieve the more balanced pattern I am working towards.

Beth’s background in PR helps her fine tune the individual program for that person’s PR needs and goals.  I struggle with being lined up, standing on the middle of my foot, hip and shoulder lined up with my ankle and ear lined up over shoulder.  We have been working with standing breath work using arm extensions with free weights.  WOW! I now have a body sense of how to hold myself lined up, without a mirror.  I am building strength in a manner that works with my PR goals instead of reverting to my un-centered pattern.  Our training sessions work with mirrors and I have accepted that I have to use mirrors at home as I am developing a new sense of my position in space.

If you are inclined to do some training work that supports your therapeutic goals, Beth Elder is the best informed trainer available. Thank you, Beth!
