Postural Restoration, the evolution of a new paradigm

As I was returning from another intensive study program, this time, the Postural Restoration Advanced Integration Course in early Dec. 2014, I reflected back, in awe, at the techniques, understandings and tools available to us for maximizing the ability to live balanced, healthy and creative lives in bodies which can move and rest efficiently and effectively. During this four day course, Mr. Hruska, founder of Postural Restoration, and his teaching staff, shared their deep insights on fundamental concepts of 3 dimensional, right side dominant, asymmetrical human function.

A few of the topics we looked at were: embryological development (our beginnings), the significance of asymmetrical muscle chain activity in promoting movement, the tremendous and specific influence breathing has on our musculoskeletal system and vice versa. We studied the pelvis, the rib cage and the cranium, and the
muscles which move these central bones differently on 2 sides of the body. We explored how to balance the 2 sides of ourselves, and how to achieve transformative, lasting results in doing so.

Our last day was devoted to treatment of curvatures of the spine; scoliosis and kyphosis in particular. All of the concepts previously introduced came together as we began to better understand the complex forces at work in these spinal changes, and how to rebalance these systems. As I, and we all return back to our respective corners of the world (since there were people from all over the world present), we have been energized and inspired to put these profound understandings into practice, enormously benefiting the people we work with, as well as ourselves.

About Susan Henning

Susan graduated from NYU in 1986 with a BA in Physical Therapy. She worked in major medical centers first in New York City, later in San Francisco, CA. Her early interest was in neurological rehabilitation. Due to a longstanding interest in dance and movement she began studies in Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy in the early 90’s. She pursued training in manual physical therapy approaches including Paris, Maitland, Mulligan and Jackson. Susan is among only a handful of physical therapists in the US with advanced certifications in both the Schroth Method and Postural Restoration for non-surgical treatment of scoliosis.
