Treating Scoliosis Conservatively: Getting the Message Out

March 7, 2016 by Jean Massé

Last month, our own Lisa Mangino PT, DPT, PCS, C/NDT, PRC was invited to Fayettville NC to present on “Current Concepts in 3 Dimensional Conservative Management of Scoliosis”. The objectives of the presentation were to help therapists gain an understanding of body imbalances related to scoliosis, to learn about scoliosis measurement tools and x-rays, and demonstrate how a 3 dimensional treatment for scoliosis might look.  Lisa was able to offer dramatic pictures of several of her patients before and after postural corrections and participants were able to see how corrective movements and awareness of postural habits using Postural Restoration and Schroth concepts, can make a big difference in reducing scoliotic curve patterns. We were also able to see how effective bracing can also make a difference in reducing scoliotic curves in growing spines. Finally, participants had some hands on time to practice screening tests, use screening tools, review x-rays and give some basic education to patients on how to start with postural correction in scoliosis. It is our hope that as we educate as many clinicians as possible regarding effective, conservative treatment for scoliosis, we will see less problems and need for surgery as children with scoliosis grow into adults.
