SCIENTIFIC EXERCISES APPROACH TO SCOLIOSIS (SEAS)

October 19, 2016 by Chris Liu-Beers

Postural Restoration Institute® (PRI) Method, Schroth Scoliosis Rehab, Inc. and now A Third Method to Conservatively Treat Scoliosis at Advance Physical Therapy

Lisa Mangino, pediatric physical therapist from Advance Physical Therapy, traveled to Avanti Therapy in Boulder, Colorado in September to learn about the Scientific Exercises Approach to Scoliosis (SEAS) method. The speakers, Michele Romano and Alessandra Negrini, directly from Italy’s Instituto Scientifico Italiano Colonno Vertebrale (ISICO), are well-published and the founders of this conservative treatment technique. They offered exercises that take 20 minutes a day to perform. The program can be customized to the patient’s curve pattern and interests while focusing on the sensory awareness of posture and position. Active spinal corrections are taught in this hands-on technique. Once the spinal corrections are performed independently, they are challenged with physical movements designed to strengthen muscles to hold the correction. Over time, these stronger, more balanced muscles will support the new corrected posture in every day life.

Lisa has already begun to use this treatment method with her patients, who offer positive feedback about the ease of performance. This new technique, in combination with concepts and exercises from the Postural Restoration Institute® and Schroth Scoliosis Rehab, Inc. is proving to be a powerful recipe to conservatively manage spinal curve progression and resulting pain.
