Total Motion Release
Total Motion Release (TMR) is a postural system that addresses many structural body complaints with exercises that are easily learned and applied. The client is empowered by learning to test and treat themselves and others for any complaint with these 5 test/exercises. TMR is an indirect approach, where exercising the “good side” helps to correct the “bad side”, such as naturally occurs when favoring a twisted ankle.
Some of the key concepts include: the body works as a whole of interconnected parts, each affecting the other; painful areas are often unilateral overworked spots or symptoms, caused by other unbalanced areas somewhere else which fail to work or move properly; body movement follows the path of least resistance with constant compensations and every person has a good side and a bad side for every movement; tightness and imbalances in movement are the cause of much body pain, and may take precedence in rehabilitation goals over strength, flexibility, endurance and other goals; restrictions far away from the pain exert a stronger influence on the painful area, due to their moment arms, and fixing those restrictions can be more effective than balancing the problems closer to the symptoms; certain power zone areas of the body handle stronger pressures: thoracic, hip/pelvis and knees.
The 5 TMR exercises are: arm raise, trunk twist, leg raise, sit to stand, and bent knee/ toe reach. Modifications of these exercises are applied when and as needed. Since whole body patterns may be strongly ingrained, postural exercises usually need to be repeated whenever needed during the day, and for at least 3 weeks, encouraging the body to adapt new patterns. Results are typically quick and treatment frequency is often of shorter duration.
