Bowen Therapy
Bowen Therapy is named after Tom Bowen, an Australian bodyworker. His work is based on soft skin rolls on muscles, tendons and ligaments with associated body movements, with the aim of balancing left side of the body to the right, top to bottom and front to back. Once blocks and restrictions in the client’s body are removed, the body realigns itself. The gentle moves are done by the therapist through clothes or on available skin, typically repeated just once in a particular pattern, with rest periods interspersed throughout a standard 30-45 minute treatment.
Treatments are usually scheduled weekly, giving the client ample time to assimilate the subtle body shifts. Areas addressed include the trunk and pelvis and diaphragm, neck, face and TMJ, arms and legs, hands and feet. The immediate reaction post treatment is typically relaxation with pain relief; sometimes one feels quite energized. Home instructions include daily walks of at least 15 minutes and the intake of a lot of good water. Often as few as 1 or 2 treatments are all that is needed, but more serious structural problems and involved cases will take significantly longer. Results are usually long lasting.
