our practice
We are a small private practice. We offer our services in a quiet, relaxed setting. Because we feel that establishing a relationship is important in the healing process, our sessions are longer than usual. We take time to listen to you and to treat you.
We believe that understanding the underlying causes of pain or dysfunction enables the therapist to treat most effectively and enables you to make good self-management decisions.
Our physical therapists have extensive experience in manual therapy techniques and exercise progressions. We are committed to facilitating your optimal function and wellbeing.

Conditions responding well to our areas of expertise include:
- Back pain, neck pain, pelvis and pelvis floor pain and dysfunction

Postural Restoration
Advance Physical Therapy became one of about 25 certified Postural Restoration Centers in the US in December 2008.
Postural Restoration recognizes the interdependent, intentionally asymmetrical organization of the body. Although balanced asymmetry facilitates efficient movement, we can easily fall into limited, habitual movement patterns, especially through overuse of our dominant side, repetitive motion activity, sedentary lifestyle or injury. The resulting muscle and joint imbalances manifest as pain, fatigue, propensity for injury, and slow recovery from trauma. Restoring balanced asymmetry is a priority for Postural restoration trained therapists. Hands-on techniques and exercises which precisely target specific muscle groups on the right or left side of the body, combined with breathing, often bring rapid pain relief. As you heal, individualized exercise progressions will enable you to self maintain and strengthen balanced asymmetry. Learn more about Postural Restoration from our Articles page.
Postural Restoration Foot Orthotics. Orthotics can be very helpful for those who need foot guidance to achieve efficient walking or running. How our feet meet the ground is determined not only by the structure of the foot itself, but by our postural alignment and movement patterns. These factors are included in the assessment and taking of foot impressions. Dr. Paul Coffin, DPM fabricates unique Postural Restoration friendly orthotics to meet your needs.
Orthopaedic Manual Therapies
Orthopaedic manual therapies include many hands-on techniques to alleviate acute and chronic pain, and to reset the nervous system. Muscles relax, inflammation is reduced, joint flexibility is enhanced. Some of the specialized techniques used by our therapists include Counterstrain or Positional Release, Active Release, Joint and Soft Tissue Mobilization, Myofacial and Connective Tissue Massage, and Bowen Therapy. Learn more about some of these therapies at our Articles page.
Sports Rehabilitation
Athletes come in all shapes and sizes. A 9 year-old boy with a painful pitching elbow and a 75 year-old gardener with back pain both still just want to “get back in the game”. Viewing virtually all patients as athletes in some form, allows us to apply a functional approach to return to “play”. While demands of the “game” may vary, Sports Medicine is simply taking the whole “game” and breaking it down in to simpler parts. Rehab professionals reinforce healthy movement patterns progressing difficulty and complexity as the body tissues adapt and strengthen from controlled stress.
Neurological Rehabilitation – Neuro-IFRAH
Neuro-IFRAH (Neuro-Integrative Functional Rehabilitation and Habilitation) is a treatment and management approach for individuals affected by lesions at the level of the brainstem and above, such as stroke or brain injury. As the name suggests, this whole person, individualized approach is integrative of all variables, related to the patient and otherwise, affecting the patient’s response and recovery, to help the person regain function, become functional in their environment, reacquire life roles and take on new roles as the person desires.
By following the principles and strategies in this approach, your therapist will work with you to regain lost movements, incorporate these movements into functional activities and ultimately to adapt to the many challenges you face in your life so that you can be successful and move in the most natural way possible.
While this approach places an emphasis on hands-on therapy, there are also therapy tools and a system of orthotics that are unique to this approach. Your therapist will make recommendations on any of these that may be useful adjuncts to your therapy, your practice at home, and while you are moving around in your daily life.

Manual Lymph Drainage
Manual Lymph Drainage is especially helpful in cases of chronic swelling and inflammation, as well as for Lymphedema and lipedema. Lymphatic function is improved through gentle massaging of superficial and deep lymph vessels, thereby decongesting lymph nodes, cleansing the body of waste products, and boosting the immune system. It is a powerful adjunct to detoxification programs. Manual Lymph Drainage is one of four essential elements of Combined Decongestive Therapies in treating Lymphedema. Other components are skin care, compression and appropriate exercise. Learn about Manual Lymph Drainage from Alma Vinjé-Harrewijn’s article “About Lymphedema” available at our Articles page. Chronic Pain
Why do some people continue to have pain long after an injury should be healed? We have learned more about the mechanisms involved in pain production in the last 10 years than in all of the past thousand years. Scientists have begun demonstrating clear changes in the body, the brain, and the personalities of those suffering with long-term pain. Faulty and or inadequate movement patterns, often the result of pain/injury adaptations, can be responsible for maintaining painful states. As the body stays in pain, the brain and nervous system also adapt by becoming even more sensitive. This then results in lower tolerance for stimulation and activity. Weakness, fatigue, fear of movement, isolation and depression often follow this pattern naturally. Armed with knowledge, specialized clinicians can now more effectively treat long-standing pain conditions by targeting those body systems stuck in the cycle of chronic pain.
